Corfu: A Greek Island With Venetian Flavor

On our way to Paxos, we spent a day in Corfu, a beautiful island off the coast of Greece. Corfu was much bigger than we were expecting, but it is one of those rare places that is so small that you can walk from the airport to the center of town in less than 20 minutes.

How To Get There & Getting Around

There are many direct flights from bigger cities in Europe to Corfu. You can also take a ferry from the mainland, or a flight from Athens. We suggest using Ferryscanner to book ferries within Greece. Once in the city, it is very easy to get around by foot as it is not that big. If needed, however, there are taxis and a few buses.

Where To Go In The Old Town

The old town of Corfu is where you will find most of the tourists and the shopping. There are a few main streets that are busy and full of people, but there are some side streets that are simply beautiful. All you have to do is walk and keep an eye out to your left and right and you will find some residential streets where the stone buildings are draped in flowers and plants, and an old man might be parking his motorbike. Those were my favorite parts of the old town!

By the port, you will find an area called Sagiada. A small park borders the port, and across the water are the remains of a military castle. Corfu used to be a powerful military presence in Greece, and was one of the three main military forces in Ancient Greek times. There is also another castle overlooking the city, although while we were there it appeared to be closed to the public. The castle in the port requires a small fee to enter, and also includes a museum.

Continue walking around the port towards the north and you will find the art museum. The grounds are small but quite beautiful, and there appeared to be a few locals hanging out and having picnics in some areas. If you continue walking through, behind the museum is the far northern point of Corfu. There is a swimming area here, and then a few restaurants along the shore with a great view of the sea and islands beyond. You can follow the port’s shoreline towards the west to find the port where the ferries depart for other islands at regular intervals.

Corfu is a picturesque town, best appreciated at night and in the evening where you can escape the heat of the day in the summer.

Where & What To Eat In Corfu

We enjoyed a few meals in Corfu, and would highly recommend just about anything seafood. At the Antranik restaurant, we enjoyed some excellent grilled octopus and grilled swordfish. The service was slow, but typical of many Greek restaurants. Just be patient and you will be rewarded with delicious food!

At the Mouragia restaurant, we were surprised to find a three course meal only cost 9,90€. They served very typical Greek food, as well as seafood. We tried the pastitchio and the souvlaki. Hands down, the souvlaki was the most delicious!

We also had excellent gelato at the Solo Gelato. As we tried gelato in many places in Corfu, we can highly recommend this one as having the best and most typical of Italian gelato. If you are a lover of gelato, this would be our top recommendation while in Corfu!

Where To Stay In Corfu

There are many choices of the type of hotel or BnB you can stay at in Corfu. We stayed at the Bella Venezia and can highly recommend this place if you want to enjoy a good breakfast! They served typical Greek food for breakfast, such as olives, feta cheese, and pastries made with filo. There are also resort hotels a little further outside of town, or AirBnB apartments. The choices are endless!

Corfu Port Tips

The main reason many people visit Corfu is to use it as a launching point for visiting other islands. We took a ferry from Corfu to Paxos, and there were multiple ferries for many other islands waiting in the port.

We did make one mistake, however. The port is huge, and we accidentally went to the wrong end of the port and had to flag a taxi to take us to the opposite end when we realized our mistake and almost missed our ferry. It is impossible to get quickly from one end of the port to the other by foot. Scout out where you should go beforehand!

Corfu: Worth A Weekend

Depending on what you like, Corfu would make a great weekend getaway. It’s a much bigger island than what you will find in the city if you want to explore more. It is also one of the greenest islands in Greece. If you don’t fancy an island like Corfu, it’s a good entry point for taking a ferry to other islands in the Ionian Sea.
